OEX Bush Pro Salamanda Bivi Tent for 1 Person, Compact and Lightweight 1 Man Tent, Ideal for Backpacking, Wild Camping and Fishing, Camping Equipment, Grey, One Size
About this deal
An ultra-compact and lightweight shelter for single campers looking to keep their kit as streamlined as possible. I haven't used the Polestar either, my experience with that style of tent is condensation can be an issue but YMMV. The bivi bag provides enough space for one person, a sleeping bag, and a pack, making it a comfortable shelter for solo campers.
Easy to put up, lots of room inside (I’m 5’9″ and a side sleeper), the poles are short enough that they’ll pack into my frame bag, meaning the bivi itself can pack smaller, or I can roll my matt into it and it’ll still fit in it’s bag. coming from a normal bivi bag it’s a gamechanger, the extra space for you head and ability to sleep sideways and not get all twisted up in a cocoon certainly helps with a better night’s sleep. You might use it more than you expect, hostels can be few and far between in some areas when on foot. However, they may not be the best choice for those who prefer more spacious accommodations or are camping in very humid conditions. The high hydrostatic head ratings of the flysheet and groundsheet ensure excellent waterproofing, keeping you dry even in heavy rain.It was OK on its own but when I added a sleeping mat and sleeping bag there was hardly any space left. However, if you’re looking for a truly lightweight shelter, there are other options on the market that may better suit your needs.
The Durston X-Mid 1 seems really good, although more expensive than what I am used to and seemingly unavailable within the UK (I’m off in less than 2 weeks, giving not that much time for postage). I wish you success in your walk but I think being discovered by a bear at night is likely to more than stressful, potentially closer to terminal. It offers good protection from the elements, although it may be a bit heavy for those looking for a truly lightweight shelter. The compact design of the OEX Salamanda Bivi Bag provided just enough space for me, my sleeping bag, and my pack. I am also not clear on the legal restrictions to fastening a hammock to local trees in each of the nine-plus jurisdictions I will be travelling through, how strictly this is enforced, and what the penalties are. I plan to stay in hostels most of the way, however I want a backup bivvy bag which I can use if I whenever I don't complete a segment by nightfall. I tend to leave the face open unless it’s properly raining and then still leave a gap for ventilation. The OEX Salamanda Bivi Bag is a versatile piece of camping gear, but it truly shines in the hands of certain types of outdoor enthusiasts.Cooking in the vestibule is possible in dry weather with door tied back and sleeping with mesh zipped round was great overnight (no rain) plenty length ,rucksack went at feet with no problem ,I’m 5 ft 9.
Also if you aren't intending to go to mountainous regions you could get away with just a bivvy bag as it is summer, but there's always the chance of getting caught in thunderstorms etc.The only issue I found was maybe a front guyline to keep the shelter more taught would be an asset, especially on a low structure,I placed an elastic cord on the door keeper and that was ok ,but a reinforcement at that point would be great . I would recommend this or some other UL trekking pole tent (Durston X Mid gets good reviews, but there are many options).
