About this deal

When the former mayor of NYC is murdered the prosecution naturally goes after his ex-wife but when new evidence comes about. We meet prosecutors, investigators and FBI agents and get an insight into how the law has to work across different departments who can come into conflict and how politics is never very far away from the surface of decision-making. Carleton, the ostensible hero of the book, is a single mother struggling to juggle her work and personal life (yada, yada).

All the evidence, including damning videos and the testimony of the building’s doorman, suggests that the culprit is none other than Burke’s most-recent ex-wife, Kyra. She herself has such a lovely voice when simply narrating, I don't get why her females are so annoying to me.

Perhaps not yet but this book impressed me enough to request the second in the series, Westport, which is coming out in May, from NetGalley. The most important takeaway, though - at least for me - is if the FBI wants you, there aren't many places you can hide (not even a Starbucks). I admit to curiosity to see what the infamous James Comey, former director of the FBI, could come up with in this genre.

Statements from Trump and the White House suggested that he had been dismissed to ease the "pressure" Trump was under due to the Russia investigation. This is a psychological drama about whether the justice system will work properly (is there a “nexus” or we can’t prosecute even though we have a pile of evidence? Much of this has to do with Comey’s peculiar decision to treat the mob figures and the lead federal agent as anachronistic, old New York archetypes.

James Comey hit the headlines back in 2017 when he was fired from his position as Director of the FBI by then-President Donald Trump. There was plenty of tension to keep the reader on the edge of their seat and the book’s pacing was good. The newly divorced Kyra Burke stands accused of murdering her ex-husband, former (disgraced) governor of New York, Tony Burke. This venture into writing has shown that he is capable of spinning a story and keeping the reader enthralled. Nora Carleton, a single mom struggling a bit to make ends meet while she takes on the world of organized crime, and her very personable (and formidable) investigator, Benny Dugan.
