About this deal

With each action you take, you spend an influence token, and the more tokens you spend the more it costs to complete all these actions. Games like Eclipse can often be a daunting prospect to play, but here there are a lot of things to help. Players each control one of seven unique factions all bidding to be the biggest and baddest there is, with points available at the end of eight rounds for controlling hexagonal space sectors, discovering technology, winning combat and a few minor activities. Every component is designed to have its own little niche inside of the game box, and there is virtually no spilling over of components when inside. The game currently has three expansions – Rise of the Ancients, released in 2012, Ship Pack One, released in 2013 and Shadow of the Rift, released in 2015 – and four mini expansions.

Whereas TI4 has a pre-defined tech tree, Eclipse offers a significantly more granular experience with players fine-tuning their ship blueprints to optimize speed, strength and/or resilience in combat as well as a multitude of of infrastructure advances. The back of the book has sections for each race, explaining what makes them different from the others and giving that bit of thematic blurb. Fine-tuned gameplay incorporating material from former expansions to create the best possible updated version of the game.

This all means that in the games I’ve played, combat tends to be a late game rush as various players finally decide that now is the time to throw around those fleets that they’ve been building up since turn one. You can also remove a token from one of your systems if you think you might have overreached yourself. This tile prevents you from forming ANY new relations with anyone AND you will receive a negative 2 vp score at the endgame.

A second edition, titled Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy was released in 2020 featuring revisions to the rules, graphic design, miniatures, and storage. These increasing numbers are meant to represent the rising cost of your empire and during the upkeep phase you will take the highest uncovered money number on your tracker board and minus the highest number uncovered on your player sheet. The box is on the bigger side of board games for sure, coming in larger than the Twilight Imperium box. These range from upgrades to your spaceships to economy upgrades and new structures that can be built across your systems. The ships are all unique from each other as far as look and ability goes AND if you got the ship wash done they look even cooler.
