About this deal

Pick A Chord follows the ethos of Weedon's hugely influential Play In A Day book and DVD, giving guitarists the tools needed to start playing from day one. I like to think that I've helped in some way to make the guitar the most popular instrument in the world. May once referred to Weedon as the "Guitar Wizard" and "a legend", while in a 1970s interview Clapton said: "I wouldn't have felt the urge to press on without the tips and encouragement that Bert's book Play in a Day gives you. The book title is probably a bit of a reach and whilst you’ll certainly be making some progress after it’s opening pages, you’ll still need application and to not be tempted to move ahead until you’re actually competent with each lesson.

This has to make it the most influential book in rock and roll history and puts dear old Bert up there with Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley in terms of impact on the music we listen to today. Mrs Woolf, wife of the manager, is a very celebrated author and, in her own way, more important than Galsworthy. B B plays almost exclusively single note runs and reportedly takes a copy of Nicolas Slonimsky's Thesaurus Of Scales And Melodic Patterns with him to practice from. Kids of today may be different of course, but back in 1963, 9 year olds wanted to learn Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Duane Eddy and Hank Marvin riffs, not dreck like Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes and Cockles And Mussels.Already an established star when rock'n'roll arrived in the UK, he was named as an inspiration by many of the biggest names in British rock and pop music. After just the first 25 minutes video tuition a complete beginner with nay six string guitar will be able to join in with Bert Weedon and his group and play their first tune. The rest of it is okay, but I guess I expected more from one of the most respected guitarists in the world. Play in a Day is easy to use, with plenty of tips for selecting the right guitar, the correct amplifier, how to hold your instrument and plenty of tunes and exercises to get to grips with.

We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. The introduction to Play in a Day claims that "this book will enable the reader to play the guitar up to a standard suitable for playing in a jazz, skiffle, or dance combination". He became the first British guitarist to have a solo record in the Hit Parade with "Guitar Boogie Shuffle" in 1959. Married to Maggie Weedon, he had two sons, Lionel and Geoffrey, eight grandchildren, and a great-grandson.I don't want to be too negative because absolute beginners might find the DVD is a goldmine of information. Brian May stated: "There's not a guitarist in Britain from my generation who doesn't owe him a great debt of gratitude. The whole point though is that his thumb was never at any time during the performance anywhere near the centre of the back of the neck as taught by Bert Weedon and to be fair, most other tutors that I am aware of. my Mum and Dad bought me a “Top Twenty” guitar for my twelfth birthday and then took me to Blackpool to watch Bert Weedon, (so that I’d know what to do with it) .

Highly regarded for his versatility, Bert's glittering career has been a strong influence on virtually every famous guitarist.

It's also, despite it's age, probably actually still the best and easiest-to-follow guide to the basics of playing guitar available - I bought this as a gag gift for the lead guitarist in my band, but we were both impressed by how clear it actually was (before he threw it at me when he realised what I was saying. Play in a Day sold more than a million copies and many a youngster was able to learn to play the guitar as a result. Next up, the thumb overs: all 3 guitarists in the Quintet du Hot Club de France (including Django who of course employed a highly unorthodox LH technique as a result of his horrific accident), Charlie Christian, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Freddie King, Duane Eddy, John Lee Hooker, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Pete Townshend, Stanley Clarke (thumb over playing Carl Thompson 32" scale piccolo bass, Weedon-style playing short-scale Alembic bass), Jeff Beck, Brian May, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Fred McDowell, Ry Cooder, Keith Richards, Ted Nugent, John McLaughlin (yes that's right) and George Benson. And what's that I see hooked over the top of Lucille's neck in full view for the entire world to see? This compilation features all his important recordings between 1956-62, notably his original versions of 'Apache' (which of course launched The Shadows' career) and 'Ginchy' (which was popularised in the US by The Ventures). Highly regarded for his versatility, Bert’s glittering career (including being voted Britain’s top guitarist nine times! Although this of course proves nothing, it does seem to suggest that the vast majority of those players who have been innovators and major influences in that vast field of music where blues, rock and jazz intermingle did or do, at one time or another, employ the thumb over LH technique.

His name is B B King and I just happen to have in front of me a 1993 copy of Ralph Denyer's The Guitar Handbook open at a photo of B B. Iain Cobby… Was walking on Brighton Palace pier some years ago when I looked up on a raised part of the cafe deck and there he was with his wife sitting enjoying the sun and a cup of tea. Born in East Ham, London, top guitar star Bert Weedon wanted to play the guitar from his very early childhood. Although I'm an amateur beginner on acoustic guitar, I'm a trained musician and a lot of the DVD content covers things I already know.
